The Walking Dead

★★★★☆ 8.1 / 10

The Walking Dead is a cultural phenomenon that defined the zombie genre for a generation. Based on Robert Kirkman's comic, the series follows a group of survivors led by Sheriff Rick Grimes as they navigate a world overrun by walkers — and the greater threat posed by other survivors. At its peak, it was the highest-rated show on cable television.

The show's greatest strength is its willingness to explore what happens to civilization when it collapses. The zombies are a constant threat, but the real drama comes from the choices people make when the rules of society no longer apply. The Governor, Negan, and the Whisperers represent different responses to the apocalypse, each raising questions about what we would become in their situation.

Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes is one of television's great protagonists, a man who evolves from sheriff to warrior to leader, carrying the weight of impossible decisions. The ensemble cast has included memorable characters across many eras: Daryl Dixon, Michonne, Carol Peletier, Glenn Rhee, and many others whose deaths devastated viewers.

The show has had ups and downs in quality, with some seasons suffering from pacing issues and repetitive structures. But at its best — particularly the first five seasons and certain later storylines — The Walking Dead delivers suspense, emotion, and horror that few shows can match. The special effects and makeup are consistently excellent.

The Walking Dead is essential for horror fans. It's a show about survival, humanity, and the things worth holding onto when everything else is gone.
