Snowfall

★★★★☆ 8.5 / 10

Snowfall is one of the most underrated crime dramas of the past decade. Created by John Singleton, the series tells the story of the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles, focusing on how a single drug transformed a city and a nation. It's a crime epic with the scope of The Wire and the tragic momentum of Breaking Bad.

Damson Idris delivers a star-making performance as Franklin Saint, a young man who builds a drug empire from nothing. Franklin is a tragic figure whose intelligence and ambition would have made him successful in any legitimate field — but in South Central LA in the 1980s, the drug trade offers the only path to power. Idris makes us root for Franklin even as we watch him become a monster.

The show weaves four storylines that gradually converge: Franklin's rise, CIA involvement in the drug trade, a Mexican luchador/family man caught between cartels, and a wealthy family whose real estate empire enables the crisis. This structure creates a comprehensive portrait of how systemic forces create epidemics.

Singleton's direction in the early seasons gives the show an authenticity that few period pieces achieve. The music, fashion, and political context are rendered with loving detail. The violence is sudden and brutal, never glorified.

Snowfall is essential viewing for anyone interested in crime dramas that engage with real history. It's a story about the American Dream as seen from its margins, and the price of reaching for it.
