House of the Dragon

★★★★☆ 8.5 / 10

House of the Dragon returns to Westeros, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and tells the story of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the series faces the impossible task of following one of television's most celebrated and controversial shows — and largely succeeds.

The show focuses on the relationship between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), childhood friends whose competing claims to the Iron Throne tear the realm apart. Their conflict is intimate and political, personal and epic. D'Arcy and Cooke deliver performances of extraordinary depth, making the tragedy feel both inevitable and heartbreaking.

Paddy Considine's King Viserys is the show's secret weapon. His portrayal of a well-meaning king whose desire for peace creates the conditions for war is one of the finest performances in the franchise. Matt Smith's Daemon Targaryen provides the chaos and charisma, a character who could be hero or villain depending on perspective.

The dragons are more prominent than in Game of Thrones, and the show uses them effectively as both spectacle and character. Each dragon has a distinct personality that reflects its rider. The battle sequences, when they come, are visceral and costly.

House of the Dragon is essential for fans of Game of Thrones who were disappointed by the final season. It's a return to the political complexity and character depth that made the original series great, with the added spectacle of dragons at war.
